Frequently Asked Questions.
Based on your interest and background, JNF can offer you a placement at one of the key working areas (helping teach at school, supporting at an organic farm or rainbow trout farm, health posts etc). Your placement location can be at any one of the several villages in Helambu Rural Municipality or at our offices in Helambu or in Kathmandu.
You will have to arrange for your own visa if you are a non-Nepali or a non-Indian national. Nepal doesn’t offer volunteer visas so we recommend you get a tourist visa or check with the Nepalese embassy in your home country before applying.
Read as much as you can about Nepal’s culture, climate, geography and community needs. Depending on the time of year you choose to volunteer, you’ll need warm layers and good hiking shoes if you’re based in Helambu during Winter (November-March). During the summers (May-June) you can pack lighter clothes and if you come during the Monsoon season (mid June-August), make sure you have your raincoat or umbrella on you. Make sure you also have travel and health insurance on you to cover unforeseen circumstances. It’s also advisable to get a medical check as conditions in Helambu may be harsh sometimes. By being well-prepared you can make the most of your volunteering experience.
Volunteers can play an instrumental role in empowering local people and communities. We also know that volunteers can gain life changing experience through a placement in rural villages. In order to fully immerse and see the impact we know it takes at least 8-10 weeks of time commitment in the placement area.
JNF doesn’t charge any fees for arranging the placement and support provided to you during your placement period.
Accommodation will be arranged in your placement location or nearby. You will be expected to contribute towards your food and accommodation which can range between $50 to $100 per week depending on the location of your stay.
We also encourage you to raise some funds around $500 to support any activities or projects during your placement. This is not mandatory but we can supply relevant information/projects and contact persons if you wish to raise funds for projects in your placement.
